Santhia is the traditional method of learning to read Gurbani correctly: not merely to recognise the words, but to pronounce each one as it should be pronounced, to observe the pauses, and to understand what is being read.
In Gurmukhi, a small difference in pronunciation can change meaning. The laga matra — the vowel marks — govern how a word is read, and reading them carelessly alters the line. Santhia is taught one-to-one or in small groups, slowly, with the student reading aloud and the teacher correcting.
All members of Sukhpreet Singh Khalsa Dhadi Jatha have received Santhia of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Jatha provides Santhia to members of the Sangat who wish to learn, and helps individuals learn correct Gurbani pronunciation and recitation.
